The Natural Step is an international non-profit organisation that has been working since 1988 to accelerate global sustainability. Using the internationally endorsed and tested Natural Step framework, which is based on sound science, systems thinking and practical business decision-making, we help companies, non-profit organisations, individuals and communities lead the transition to an ecologically, socially and economically sustainable future.

Address problems at the source

Our upstream approach to sustainability means we address problems at the source and turn them into opportunities for innovation and success - for businesses, non-profit groups and communities.

Lasting integrated sustainability

The Natural Step's decision-making Framework complements and gives strategic direction to environmental management systems such as ISO 14001 and Enviromark, and to programmes such as eco-efficiency, cleaner production, quality assurance, triple bottom line reporting, social responsibility and Local Agenda 21 initiatives, helping organisations move beyond ad hoc initiatives to lasting integrated sustainability.

In New Zealand we have been operating since 1997, working with large and small businesses, local and regional authorities and other organisations to co-create solutions designed to accelerate the transition to a sustainable future. The Natural Step Foundation is funded by charitable foundation grants and individual donations, as well as by fees generated by our advisory work.
